China's research and development of clean energy electric-driven helicopters will abandon the traditional momentum

August 23, 2023

Reporter recently learned that China is currently undertaking lithium battery-powered helicopter research and development. The new design will completely abandon the traditional aeroengine, to promote the use of new energy, while reducing the overall noise of the helicopter.

All countries in the world have made great achievements in developing energy efficient helicopters. Among them, the EU put forward the "green rotorcraft" program, the United States developed a "firefly" demo prototype. In order to realize the simultaneous development with relevant foreign technology fields, AVIC Helicopter Research Institute is currently also carrying out research and development of a new concept electric powered helicopter.

According to the staff introduction, the design of clean energy electric drive helicopters, lithium-ion batteries will be used as a power source to drive high-power density motors, motor drag rotor and tail rotor, helicopter flight. This design completely abandon the traditional aeroengine, remove the helicopter exhaust emissions, reducing the helicopter's overall noise performance.

With the future progress of battery technology, battery life extension, unmanned electric helicopter can perform field investigation, attack, patrol line, aerial photography and other military and civilian tasks. (Chutian)
