Other diseases of the human body can generally be identified by blood or other biomarkers, but so far, most mental diseases can only be evaluated through patient observation. It requires a psychiatrist or related medical practitioner to follow up on the patient ’s behavior and long-term follow-up Other external symptoms to determine whether the patient is schizophrenic, depressed, or two-way emotional disorder. This has been a controversial issue in the medical community.
Dr. Misha Lagoliski of the Beersheba Mental Health Center in Israel and his colleagues said that finding a suicidal pathology is the key to the study, especially among adolescents. He said that 60% of teenagers with serious suicidal thoughts will disclose these ideas and attempt suicide within a year. According to statistics from the Israeli Department of Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people aged 10 to 24.
Misha's research began in 1995 and ended in 2004. A total of 108 inpatients between 12 and 18 years of age were selected. The control group randomly selected 79 people. They divided the inpatients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and other mental disorders into two categories based on the medical examination before the study began: suicide and non-suicide. The control group is considered to be a non-suicide group.
They evaluated each person's age, gender, smoking habits, and platelet count, and found that the platelet count was only related to it: suicidal patients had higher platelet counts than non-suicidal patients and healthy controls. To prove that platelet count has nothing to do with depression, the researchers compared suicidal and non-suicidal depression patients and found that platelet count was indeed related to depression patients' suicidal tendency. Misha said: "It goes without saying that such a study will have a major impact on the diagnosis of psychiatric illnesses around the world, which can prevent how many people are misdiagnosed."
Misha said that they will soon publish a paper focusing on patients with bipolar disorder, using platelet count to predict their possible mania and depression. At the same time, they believe that the relationship between psychological science and neurology and biology is getting closer and closer. "This will lead and promote more accurate diagnostics and find more subtle differences between different mental patients to take more suitable treatments."
