Nidec Unveils Traction Motor System for Electric Vehicles and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles

June 17, 2023

Nippon Denshi Co., Ltd. Introduces Traction Motor System for Electric Vehicles and Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles. At the 2018 Beijing Motor Show, Nippon Denshi highlighted its use in electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The traction motor system (E-axle), which integrates traction motors, gearboxes and inverters, is planned to be mass-produced in 2019. The first company equipped with this motor will be a Chinese local car company.

The E-Axle motor system incorporates a separate traction motor system with an inverter released in September last year, which has resulted in a significant increase in output power compared to previous years. By adopting an integrated design, external wiring between components is greatly simplified, and the miniaturization and weight reduction of the traction motor system are realized, thereby improving the flexibility of the vehicle layout. The peak power and the system's maximum output torque can be increased to 150kW and 3900Nm respectively, but its weight is only 83kg, achieving lighter weight.

By using the clutch mechanism (optional configuration), this system can also be applied to AWD systems and PHEV systems, and can be widely used in various models ranging from small cars to SUVs.

The new motor will be mass-produced in China in 2019. The first company equipped with this motor will be a Chinese local car company, and will be promoted globally thereafter.

Nidec Corporation was established in July 1973. It was founded by Mr. Yoshikazu Yasuo and is a Japanese listed company in the electrical and electronic industry. The business includes the production and sale of precision small motors, medium-sized motors, machine devices, electronic and optical components and other products.

In 2017, Japan’s electric power sales amounted to 1,481,100 million yen, which was approximately 100 billion yuan after conversion, and continued to grow for five consecutive fiscal years. Among the 1,481 billion yen, the precision small-motor business was an important factor in sales. As part of this, it is also a product that Nippon Electric Power Co., Ltd. has started with and has a very high market share. The main business in the future will be motors used in the automotive, home appliance, commercial, and industrial sectors. The on-board department accounts for about 20% of the company's total sales, which is a great development compared to the previous period.

In the automotive field, there are also a wide range of applications, such as chassis motors, power transmission motors, advanced driver assistance systems, and camera components; but in the automotive industry, the most important is the power transmission motor, which replaces traditional gasoline. Power motor, E-Axle motor system is the future of the product.
