The latest mobile app helps students relieve stress and regulate their physical and mental health

September 18, 2022

According to media reports, many students have hidden their life and learning pressures in reality. Dean directors, teachers and doctors are also less likely to know all the students' situations inside and outside the classroom. Stress, mood swings, large workloads, social and sleep all have an impact on students' academic performance and mental health. However, it is much more convenient to have this app.

The latest mobile app helps students relieve stress and regulate physical and mental health

A research team at Dartmouth College developed an application, StundentLife, developed by computer science professor Andrew Campbell. The app takes advantage of the features of the phone to gain insight into the student's personal experience. Through analysis, experts can understand the negative emotions of individuals and help them improve their stress and related problems.

The app was first loaded into an Android phone of 48 students. After 10 weeks of using the app, they completed the first investigation phase and determined their physical and mental health baseline. The app then uses the sensor data in the phone to monitor and analyze student behavior. For example, the acceleration sensor can understand the student's exercise pattern, and the GPS can know the time spent by the student at a certain place, the frequency and duration of the phone call, and other data including sleep time and light intensity. Students are also required daily daily surveys to understand their emotional and stressful conditions, as well as their daily diet. The application adapts to each user's behavioral pattern through learning algorithms, after another 10-week research investigation process.

The team collected a total of 52.6GB of data from the participants' mobile phones. Through analysis and analysis, they found that the data can reflect the impact of student behavior on physical and mental health and academic performance. The results show that more sleep and more communication times mean that students are less likely to have depressed emotions, and personal social relationships are also very good. The higher activity amount means that students are less likely to have loneliness and loneliness. It also shows that social interaction is also strongly related to academic achievement and attendance.

Professor Campell said: "Through the smartphone application we developed, we can effectively use the sensing system to automatically speculate on people's behavior."
